Nyamata Genocide Memorial.
This Memorial Centre is in a former church “Nyamata church” about 30km South of Kigali city in Rwanda which is one of the six national memorial sites that commemorate the Rwanda genocide in 1994. A big number of people across the world must have heard and known about Rwanda through the 1994 genocide that claimed over 1 million innocent people and this was massively published and broadcasted locally and internationally. Most of them recall the genocide through a movie titled Hotel Rwanda.
Rwanda since the end of the genocide has immensely tried to recover and heal from one of the most horrific acts to mankind. Numbers of travellers that visit the Rwanda genocide memorial site have been seen increasing to date. And most of these come to witness and get firsthand information about what exactly happened in Rwanda during the time of the genocide. The other national genocide memorial sites in Rwanda include;the Kigali genocide memorial, Ntarama GenocideMemorial, murambi memorial, Bissero Genocide Memorial centre, and Nyarubuye Memorial. The Rwanda genocide started in April 1994 whereby many Tutsi people gathered at Nyamata church as churches were mostly considered as a place of safety.
About 10,000 people gathered here and the people locked themselves within the Nyamata church, up-to-date church walls show how the ruthless perpetrators made holes in the walls of the church so that grenades could be thrown into the church. After this, the people inside were shot or killed with machetes. The ceiling of the church well shows the bullet holes and the altar cloth full of blood stains for the people that were murdered here. Most of the remains have been buried but clothing and identification cards are still seen here. Identification cards were what helped to identify people as either Tutsi or Hutu as this was majorly a war over ethnicity. People in the neighboring and surrounding area were also killed after the massacre at the church. The remains and bodies of about 50,000 people are buried here.
